Yes its happened. and what has absolutely astounded me is the cost involved and the difference in cost from mechanic too mechanic.
My patrol is currently at my normal mechanics, who has worked on it since ive had it. His initial verbal price was 2-3000 which quickly escalated to 6500 to finally in a written quote 5700.
Two other mechanic shops have both quoted 4500.
And finally On Track has quoted 3500, but cant do it till the first week in jan.
So I guess the girl is coming home on a tilt tray and is either sitting till jan or being done by me in the shed.
The moral of the story. . .gets lots of quote cause some people out there just have a lend eh |

Sorry to hear your bad news Mark, Have you any idea what the problem is? Is water leaking through the head gasket, a definite crack, or a burnt out valve, suspected warped head, lack of cylinder pressure with a power drop the result?
I imagine you may have no idea till the head is lifted.
Surely a reconditioned head would not be that expensive? My old GQ turboed motor sold for $2250 and with 235,000 kms on the clock.
Qld Patrols in Denison Street Rockhampton. were very helpful to me when I bought a replacement rear door for the GU. It was on my front door way in two days. I can't recall their number at the moment, but it is easy to Google.
Good Luck!
And Merry Christmas.

Thanks Andy,
apart from using a bit of water/coolant everything was good, heaps of power and going like a dream. Even drove it to my normal mechanic for the cooling system check as it boiled on sunday. it is now at a old established Rochedale and recommended family owned/operated auto shop. He is old school and not just a spare parts fitting mechanic. So we will see how it goes there.. . . |

Make sure you put a low water level sensor in when you have it repaired. For a couple hundred dollars it can prevent thousands of dollars worth of damage.

Try Engine Australia. and Nizzbits. If it's a 3 litre you need to factor in new head bolts as well as a head gasket and VRS kit

Try Lee's Performance Parts for a price, I bought a new head from him in 2014 for a Nissan Patrol with ZD30 engine. I think I paid around $700 Bare if memory is correct and it is still going strong. Parts are all delivered to his business at Underwood.

Forgot to mention that I took old and new heads to Walker Engineering (Murray Walker ) at 22 Brennan St. Slacks Creek Phone 38085977 and he changed valves over from old head to new head. I took both heads as all components of each valve have to go back in same place for tappet adjustment. Cost about $300. |
