Hi all,
I'm new to this site and i was just wondering if i could pick your brains?
I own a GQ TD42 with a turbo conversion and was wondering if anyone else has had problems with them running hot.
The vehicle was fine when we took it up round Mt Mee to knock the edges of it,run a bit warm, but nothing to worry about, the problem was when we took it on the beach. I have to admit it at the mo it has some awful tyres on that no matter how much air you let out the tyres don't seem to spread out, but on the beach it runs quite hot, so much so that you have to stop and let the thing cool abit before you can carry on. Has anyone else had this prob, and if so is there a way to help the old girl keep cool.
Thanks
Hopefully i'll be able to get t he your next meet at Mt Gravatt

G'day Stephen,
Although my GQ is a petrol, I was also having overheating problems, a 3 row radiator and new thermostat fixed it.
If you do want a 3 row radiator (I got mine from Cairncross Radiators at Acacia Ridge, about $500) make sure you get the thick 48mm one, there is also a thin 3 row that is no thicker than a standard radiator.
A couple of other things to look for,
Check your viscous fan hub, the engine fan should only keep spinning for less than 3 seconds after engine shutdown, any more and the hub is probably faulty.
While your looking at the fan, check the fan blades for cracking around the centre, very common on Patrols.
You can get new blades at a good price from 'roodogs.com' (thanks Graham), you just need to measure the bolt spacing as there are 2 different sizes.

A new radiator core will see the old girl keeping her cool for many years to come.
When driving on the beach, the vehicle always needs to work a bit harder and any weakness in the cooling system will be noticed. The last thing you want to do is to let the motor get overheated, metals will warp etc and other expensive problems will develop.
A visit to a radiator shop should sort you out!
Good luck!
